Gábor Városi - Stories, Artworks, Artistic periods

166 These are works inspired by a fascination with something ancient. They remind us more of masks. They captivate the viewer with their rustic power, as the small African sculpture did for Picasso when Matisse placed his fresh acquisition in his hands at Gertrude Stein’s house in 1906. Városi’s glass faces are looking at you, and you know they are looking into you. The maverick wildness that exudes from these works illustrates the relationship between material and creator. Glass is an inhospitable medium. You might think it to be feminine and fragile, but it is liquid fire. When it solidifies, it is hard as a rock. Like lava from the depths of the earth, it flows with unbridled energy, expanding and flowing, hardening into breath-taking shapes once it has cooled down. Yup'ik Mask 2022 50 x 20 cm fused glass
