Gábor Városi - Stories, Artworks, Artistic periods

290 Let everyone see what they want to see, because this way, the viewer’s inner image becomes visible by the hands of Városi. The artwork is born twice. Once, when the painter, having switched off all his consciously controlling functions, expresses his inner unconscious mind with psychic automatism in gestures that surprise even himself (a kind of visual “Free Ideas Notebook”, not only intended for a psychoanalyst). Then it is born again – and again and again – differently every time someone looks at the picture. Just like a Rorschach test. The “same” is always “different” depending on who is looking. These, at first glance traditional gesture paintings are anything but traditional. They are well-crafted and sophisticated. The technique of their creation is undoubtedly unique. As the first step, the basic image is created in a small scale, which is then enlarged and applied to the clear plexiglass surface. “Smaller means less inhibition. The spontaneous, automatic gestures that come uncontrollably from the unconscious would stall on a large scale. At least that’s how it is for me,” – Gábor explains the process. “The gestures, painted on a small scale, undergo an unexpected metamorphosis through the change of scale. It’s unplanned, but the surprise that comes with enlargement is an unexpected experience every time for me too. Then another layer of plexiglass is applied to the surface of the base. The cobweb-like texture of the adhesive also becomes a creative visual element, while it holds the top and bottom sheets of plexiglass together with some distance between them. This gives the image a specific three-dimensionality, with the paint being applied directly to the shiny top layer at a real scale, manually.
