Gábor Városi - Stories, Artworks, Artistic periods

340 Gábor, you’re too old to die young, you’ve seen and successfully experienced so much – how much longer can you keep up with progress? – Sometimes I have to tell myself not to compete during trainings with people decades younger than me. I still don’t always manage to stop. But I don’t want to give out life advice - especially because I don’t feel old enough to do so. But all joking aside, I am still very curious and try to incorporate new things, technologies and materials into my work, whether it’s alcantara in the interiors of houses, computer modelling in fine art, or a quick Revolut transaction in a shop. It is incredibly exciting to see the advances in technology, the computer capacity in every pocket that was unimaginable just a few years ago, the knowledge and inspiration that can be found online, the ease of staying in contact. I could go on until the break of dawn. Recently I’ve been very excited about the world of blockchain and crypto – I’m learning – the possibility of virtual exhibitions in the Metaverse, and of course, my artworks interacting with the audiences as NFTs is also an exciting perspective. You throw around Web3 concepts as if you really knew what you were talking about... – My teachers will be pleased to hear that! I admit that it’s not easy to learn new things at my age, but I don’t want to be left behind. I’m really excited by a story like the one of Bitcoin, the fact that someone, in response to the financial crisis of 2008, programmed a cryptocurrency that would evolve autonomously, buffering against any unpredictable changes in the economic environment. If you think about it, in some ways an independent and free decentralised currency is like a work of art whose value is decided by its users, not by institutions or politics. A Picasso painting is worth what the solvent buyer thinks it is worth, just as the price of Bitcoin is decided by the users online. So, for me, a smart artist colleague is Satoshi Nakamoto, or rather the team named after him.
